It took two overtimes and a shootout to decide the winner but the Vikings came out on top and advance to the soccer district semi-final next week. Cadillac beat Gaylord 4-3 on Thursday in the opening round of districts.
The Vikings started out hot, scoring the first three goals of the game before halftime. Bryan Farley netted the first goal off an assist from Sawyer McClure, then Brady McLaurin scored from an assist by Ben Kohler to take a 2-0 lead. Brendan McRoberts added another off an assist from Farley before Alpena finally got on the board just before half to cut the lead to 3-1. Alpena scored two more goals in the second half to tie it at 3-3 at the end of regulation.
The two teams held each other scoreless through two ten-minute overtimes sending the game into a shootout. Caden Windover, Farley, McRoberts, and McLaurin all made their shots — Alpena matched them up until the last shot when they sent the ball wide of the net to give Cadillac the win.
Elliot Lavigne made five saves in goal for Cadillac.
Cadillac will host Gaylord on Tuesday for the District Semi-Final game. It will be open to the general public — tickets are $6 each.
