The stands were packed for Fan Appreciation night on Friday, and the Vikings put on quite a show for them. But it wasn’t exactly a pretty start for the Vikings. The team couldn’t buy a basket in the first quarter against TC Central but it’s the finish that counts.
The Vikings trailed 10-3 after one, but a huge second quarter got them right back in it. Three’s started falling, one after another, in the final minutes of the half to move the Vikings within one point of the Trojans, 25-24.
The Trojans took a five point lead in the third, but it was the final seconds of the game that had the fans clapping.. and gasping.. and then clapping again. Cadillac had the ball with nine seconds left on the clock, down by one. A missed layup gave the ball back to Central — they couldn’t capitalize — instead they fouled, sending Senior Cooper Benson to the line with 7.3 seconds left on the clock. Two clutch free throws by Benson gave the Vikings a one point lead and sealed the Vikings’ victory, 50-49.
The win moves the Vikings into sole possession of second place in the BNC behind Petoskey, and pushes the Trojans into third place.
The Vikings (JV/Var) are home Tuesday against Manistee starting at 5:30.
